Since August 2017, the humanitarian crisis involving Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, has garnered global attention. An estimated 745,000 Rohingya refugees have sought refuge in Cox’s Bazar, bringing the total number to approximately 969,719 as of November 2023 (as per UNHCR data). These refugees, organized into 201,778 families, currently reside in various Rohingya camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar. Responding to this pressing situation, the Prantic Unnayan Society (PRANTIC) is actively supporting the Rohingya response program since 2018. PRANTIC’s ongoing projects span critical areas such as education, health, livelihood, women’s empowerment, emergency response, and food and meat distribution during Eid festivals. However, the global COVID-19 pandemic has introduced new challenges for Rohingya refugees. A recent decision to reduce ration amounts, from USD 12 to USD 10 since March 2023 and subsequently to USD 8 from June 2023, adds further strain. However, WFP has recently planned to increase the ratio from USD 8 to 10 again to mitigate the pressures from different sectors. However, reducing rations may exacerbate existing needs within the refugee community, significantly impacting aspects such as education and livelihood. In response to these pressing challenges, the project has been meticulously designed to provide livelihood opportunities, especially for for the female adolescents and youths.
