Bottle Gourd Cultivation in Bhasan Char

PRANTIC, in partnership with OBAT Helpers Inc. USA, has been supporting the women of the Rohingya community through engaging them in various income generating activities. Homestead gardening is one of them. PRANTIC distributed about 48 varieties of vegetable seeds among them however got better performance in some varieties such as Bottle Gourd, Pumpkin, Wax gourd, Beans, Ridge Gourd, Sponge Gourd are few of them. PRANTIC also collected seeds from Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydevpur, Dhaka to ensure quality and availability of seeds to distribute to the Rohingya families for the Homestead Gardening. Most successful varieties are Turnip, Cauliflower, Squash, Maize, Ladies Finger, Bean, Cucumber, Gourd, Green Chilli, Binjal, Dhanuya Chilli (locally called Dhani Morich), Ridge Gourd, Carrot, etc. In 2024, Bottle Gourd achieved a bumper production as one of salinity tolerant varieties in Bhasan Char.
